Exploring Wurbauerkogel on foot

You’ve packed your rucksack, and your hiking shoes are ready for you to put them on – time to explore Wurbauerkogel Adventure Mountain on foot! Off you go to Windischgarsten in the Pyhrn-Priel region! Hiking enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of exciting and diverse routes in the Kalkalpen National Park.

Eines geht auf den Touren rund um den Wurbauerkogel immer mit: die beeindruckende Aussicht auf die umliegende Bergkulisse.

Die Vielfalt an Wanderwegen und Freizeitmöglichkeiten für Jung und Alt ist in Windischgarsten in der Urlaubsregion Pyhrn-Priel schier grenzenlos.

HIKING TIP NO. 1

Simberg – Wurbauerkogel

Option 1: Starting in the town centre of Windischgarsten, an asphalt road first leads you to the access area of the chairlift. A few stairs then take you up onto a gravel trail which lets you get to the reservoir pond. You’ll be at the Simbergwiese meadow in just a few minutes. From there, you can take the forest road that leads you onto trail no. 2 and later to Wurbauerkogel’s mountain station. 

Option 2: From Windischgarsten’s market square, Kühbergstraße takes you from the valley station of Wurbauerkogel’s chairlift to the pavillon where you need to take a left and then follow the road. Once you reach the next right turn, you can take trails no. 5 and 2 to the mountain station.

HIKING TIP NO. 2

Spregaus – Wurbauerkogel

Start: From the tourist information in the town centre of Windischgarsten (Bahnhofstraße 2, 4580 Windischgarsten), walk towards Café Thallinger and then take a left turn onto Fischergasse. From there, you’ll continue across the bridge of the Dambach stream. Follow the signposts and keep left at the Alpenvereinshaus! Then follow the Spregausweg to its end. Continue across the small gravel pit and follow the Naturfreundesteig trail. Hiking trail no. 2  leads you to the mountain station of Wurbauerkogel. 

The hike from Windischgarsten to Adventure Mountain and the gravel pit including Gmeiner Aussicht (scenic viewpoint) is quite challenging, yet suitable for hikers of all ages. The route also leads you past the mountain restaurant on Wurbauerkogel.

HIKING TIP NO. 3

Wurbauerkogel via Troier and Mostschänke Horner (tavern)

The summit of Adventure mountain is a popular excursion destination for families and groups. Once you arrive at the top, you’ll not just be rewarded with stunning views of 21 two-thousand-metre summits on the Panorama Tower. You can also look forward to a mountain climbing park, a 3D archery course and the exhibition at the tower. 

Details about the hike: 

  • Walking time: about 1.5 hours 
  • You can shorten the way back down into the valley by taking the chairlift. 

HIKING TIP NO. 4

“Natur-Spuren” (nature’s traces) adventure trail

The special feature of this hike: The adventure trail connects the National Park Lodge Villa Sonnwend with the various adventure stations on Wurbauerkogel and its Panorama Tower. Eight stations ensure lots of variety and fun for all family members during this hike. 

By the way: At the “Nationalpark-Blick” scenic viewpoint, you’ll be able to see the “Innere Steinwand” – and you just might see an Alpine chamois as well!

  • Walking time: about 3 to 3.5 hours 
  • Recommended return route to Villa Sonnwend: trails no. 2, 3 or 8
  • The fire salamander symbol serves as a guide system on the themed trail. 
  • Especially on rainy days, this adventure trail is a great choice! Why? Fire salamanders love moisture … 

HIKING TIP NO. 5

Bannholzmauer loop

A hike for family members of all ages that also leads you to many of the attractions and activities on Wurbauerkogel. Top off your hike with a climbing adventure at the Mountain Climbing Park! The choice is yours … 

Details about the hike: 

  • Walking time: about 1.5 hours 
  • Starting point: Villa Sonnwend

 

Tip: You can also take the chairlift up the mountain, and start your hike right at the mountain station on Wurbauerkogel – walking time: about 45 minutes.

Hiking Tip No. 6

Kleinerberg – Sender – Leitersteig

This hike isn’t for the faint-hearted! As you gradually approach the ladder via ferrata, the terrain starts to change as well. Being sure-footed and not afraid of heights is a must on this trail. Grab your hiking boots and get hiking if you’re up for the challenge! 

Details about the hike: 

  • Walking time: about 3.5 to 5 hours (starting on Wurbauerkogel) 
  • Hiking trails: no. 9 or 9a, 472 and 1 
  • There’s a short steep ascent in the area of the Schafsteig trail. 
  • Starting point: Wurbauerkogel’s mountain station 
  • If you start your hike at the valley station, you should add about 45 minutes to the estimated duration of the hike. 

HIKING TIP NO. 7

Kleinerberg – Sender – Haslersgatter

Stunning 360-degree views await ambitious and aspiring hikers on this route to the Haslersgatter. The so-called “wildlife hike” to Kleinerberg in the beautiful Pyhrn-Priel region holds several highlights in store. One of them is the majestic Villa Sonnwend. The loop starts with an ascent via the Schafsteig trail to the antenna on Kleinerberg. Via the forest road, you’ll be hiking down to the Haslersgatter and the Svetlin. You should definitely visit the mountain church while you’re there! To get back to the starting point, follow the asphalt road!

  • Walking time: about 2.5 to 3 hours 
  • Add another 45 min if you start your hike in Windischgarsten!
  • Hiking trails: no. 9a and 9 
  • Starting point: Wurbauerkogel’s mountain station
